چکیده

We analyze the gain obtained by deploying, in an IP-over-WDM network, two classes of service differentiated by their type of protection. The first one, called FP (Fully Protected), is protected at the WDM or SONET layer by a 1:1 protection strategy, while the second one, called BEP (Best Effort protected), offers no specific guarantee on service disruption is provided. In case of failure it offers to restore as much of the affected traffic as possible. Given an already routed FP traffic matrix, we maximize the amount of BEP traffic admitted in the network in both the regular operation, without any failure, and after a the occurrence of a single failure. The optimization procedure allows the operator to choose the weight he wants to give to these contradictory objectives. We develop an efficient heuristic for solving this problem on large networks. An interesting finding is that the choice of this weight has an important impact on the amount of BEP traffic that can be restored, but only in some range within .

Survivability in IP-over-WDM Networks: WDM Lightpath Protection versus IP LSP Protection

This article compares the performance of WDM lightpath protection and IP LSP protection schemes for IP-over-WDM networks. A mathematical formulation of the maximum throughput problem is presented and analytical expressions for recovery time are derived for both schemes. The throughputs and recovery times are analyzed and compared. Results show that the IP LSP protection scheme presents higher t...

A Novel Fuzzy Logic Base Scheduling Mechanism for Service Differentiation in IP Networks

Quality of Service (QoS) refers to a set of rules or techniques that help the network administrators use the available network resources optimally to manage the effects of congestion and to treat the applications according to their needs. The differentiated services architecture (DiffServ) allows providing quality of service to users. The major DiffServ premise is that individual flows with sim...

Fault management in IP-over-WDM networks: WDM protection versus IP restoration

We consider an IP-over-WDM network in which network nodes employ optical crossconnects and IP routers. Nodes are connected by fibers to form a mesh topology. Any two IP routers in this network can be connected together by an all-optical wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) channel, called a lightpath, and the collection of lightpaths that are set up form a virtual topology. In this paper, we ...

Investigation of the time-offset-based QoS support with optical burst switching in WDM networks

IP over WDM networks have been receiving much attention as a promising approach to building the next generation Internet since it can reduce complexities and overheads associated with the ATM and SONET layers. Provision of quality of service (QoS) is one important topic in next generation Internet. Recently, An optical burst switching scheme to support basic QoS at the WDM layer, the offset-tim...

Priority-Aware IP over Hierarchical WDM Ring Networks

WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) appears to be the solution of choice for providing a faster networking infrastructure that can meet the explosive growth of the Internet. It has the scalability problem with increasing the access node numbers in WDM ring architecture, so we further propose the alternatives of hierarchical WDM ring architecture. Since the traditional IP provides the best ef...
